Someone Wants a Slurpee

Driving through Marin over 4th of July weekend we drove past a deer walking to a 7-Eleven parking lot.
We had to turn the car around to get a closer look. Just like a nature show huh? Complete with asphalt, paint, and concrete.

You wouldn't see one of these at the 7 11 where I live. That's pretty cool!

There's good eatin' on one of those...and with the pelt you could make a poncho!

(and a hat stand with the antlers...)

We see them from time to time where I am...but it's usually the smarter and braver ones that make it across the railroad tracks. I haven't seen one at the 7 11 here yet. I'll keep an eye out though...you never know.

He has really neat horns! They are so different from the horns of the deer that I grew up around. Or, er, antlers, I guess. It's nice to be reminded of a little animal diversity!

Deer's need slurpees too...

I wonder if they get brain freeze? Maybe that's where the deer in the headlights look comes from.

We live in a heavily populated suburb, but close enough to a wooded area that we get deer in the yard from time to time. It still surprises me to see a deer standing in my driveway, even after 5 years.

The other night I came home late and was walking to the door when a baby skunk ran by right in front of me (3 inches from my feet). It's a fine line between wanting to freak out, and not wanting to upset the skunk.

So Nemo's in the shower and now Bambi at the 711?

Disney is stalking you.

On Big Pine Key, one of the lower keys in Florida, there is a deer refuge (it's for Key Deer) and you can see deer by the 100's, literally. They've gotten so used to people, that you can go up to them, even though they are still considered wild, to pet and feed them. It's pretty stellar!

That's Marin for ya!

We have deer here that like to shop at the mall and for some reason they like to eat at Applebees.

Beautiful and, of course, really sad.

I go to school at UCSC, University of California, Santa Cruz, and this is a daily occurrence for me as the campus is built in a forest, with concrete roads... I've become desensitized!

I see deer almost everyday. There is one who grazes at the entrance to my apts. She doesn't even run. Just stands and stares at you. They live in the woods that divide us from the shopping center. It's not unusual to see them walking down the street in the evenings. Sad though, because it means that their habitats are being destoyed.

Dang Jorge, you were five minutes from my house! Next time just drop by! ;)

It seems dangerous in the middle of a highway!
Here, in Brazil, we can see capybara, jaguar, anteaters, cows, armadillos ... crossing the road. LOL
The nature asks for help.

The reason the deer's antlers look funny is because that deer is in velvet. During the rut (mating season) the deer fight each other and rub their antlers on stuff and the velvet peels off leaving the antlers most people are used to seeing.

I have been working with a friend of mine on a project to help find Haleigh Cummings. It is not part of the official search, but her grandmother knows about it and supports it. For the moment, we're calling this "Snapshot Search". We are asking celebrities to print out Haleigh's missing poster (http://www.missingkids.com/missingkids/servlet/AmberExternalFCServlet?act=retAmberCase&amberId=6848) and take a picture of themselves holding it and then post it online. It would be so wonderful if you could do this.

That deer's thinking: "Just look straight, don't look back... keep walking, keep walking.. they'll leave me alone if I don't look scared..."

That's beautiful. Hope he/she stays safe crossing the road. We have lot's of wildlife in our own backyard. One morning an armadillo came waddling out when I was outside in my bathrobe with the dogs. We looked at each other with the same horror, and he went bolting back into the woods, and the dogs and I inside!!
