More Ireland: Waterford

So we stopped in Waterford for the night. It has this tower from the old viking days. We went to this pub because it said they had live music. We got in and it was packed. Beth suggested I duck into this smaller room on the right to avoid getting too much attention. Of course just our luck the first guy who sees me starts freaking out, "IT'S HURLEY FROM LOST! IT'S HURLEY FROM LOST!" so pretty much the whole bar knows now. We snuck up to the second floor but it was too late really. Sitting there became a parade of photo ops for people so we decided to call it a night and went back to our hotel.

On the road to Waterford though we passed a cool church. This is one of my favorite shots of the trip.

Sweet photo of the church!

Ireland is truly a wonderful place. Sorry to hear about the Bar Scene! Did you buy a crystal?

wow - that is an awesome pic of the church! Bummer about the dude/people in the pub ... that doesn't happen much here in Hawaii does it? I like to think that we're a little more low-key and respectful of your privacy, but maybe I'm wrong?

glad you guys will be back to work soon!

That is a beautiful picture. Reminds me of a pic someone took of a landmark that used to stand where I work.

Do you get recognized a lot when you travel? I mean, here in NYC it's not surprising to see a famous person, but I'd imagine it comes as a bit of a shock to people in a small town in Ireland :)

If a I ever see you... I'll be discret. I promise ;) But I'll say: It's jorge frome dispatches from the island! jajajaj ;)

That's so awesome. I lived in Ireland for awhile in college, two weeks of which (my favorite two weeks) was spent in Waterford. I love that town; the Three Shippes is awesome. Thanks for posting these; it brought back happy memories.

that's too bad that you don't get any peace when you go out. That's got to be tough to live with when trying to have a normal life. Beautiful photo of the cross. Thanks for sharing your trip with us, it's great.

Aww man, sorry about the bum night at the pub. Blah. If I see you in public, I'll simply smile and move on ... and maybe comment on the blog. Right? Right.

That is an AWESOME picture!! Dude, you'll forever be recoqnized!

Dude, it just goes to show you how popular a figure you are dude, as celebrities tend to get treated like everyone else.

But then you were in a pub and the drink was obviously a big influence in loosening the guys tongue :)

Shame it spoiled your quiet night out.

Really cool pic, reminds me of photos that a friend from Bristol was taking photos of around here, he seems to do a lot of sun shine through the monuments :)

Unknown said...

The few times I have actually run into a celebrity...I usually have the opposite reaction. First I quietly freak out, then I run in the opposite direction. You should have seen me when I literally came nose to nose with THE David Crosby. Poor man probably thought I was unhinged.

I love your character though...and your blog! Enjoy the rest of your trip. Maybe one day I'll pluck up the nerve to actually write a "fan" letter LOL.

That photo of the church is GORGEOUS. I love how the light is shining through the cross. Just beautiful!!!

So, did you get any crystal while you were there?

Mom2haylil said...

I am sorry to hear that your night was cut short. I love listening to live music in bars. I have to admit though I was waiting to hear a punchline along the lines of the "live music" was one man with a harmonica or a chic with an accordion.

redelf said...

I hate to say...while I would not have followed you around I might have tried for a picture from whereever I was which means as usually I get a lot of pictures of the back of peoples heads. Not that I have seen a lot of stars. The only one I have actually "seen" close was Peter O'Toole at a book signing and he was fantastic, kissed me on the cheek and everything!

Ben said...

Love the church pic. Great job capturing the light shining through the cross, very dramatic. But... is that a UFO off to the right? :-)

Oh wow... All of your travel photos have been really cool, but that last one is just stunning. *is jealous* :D

and then we later read online that some chicks that asked for a photo that night had been following us that day on the street and followed us right to the bar. yikes.

Love the church photo, I always wondered, are you more likely to be friendly to someone if they use your real name or if they call you hurley.

IslandPearl said...

The church shot is beautiful - you have a good eye.

I have a weird "ability" to not recognize a celebrity in my surroundings. I sat next to Ben Vereen on a flight recently and didn't recognize him til some obnoxious little old lady started schmoozing and he had to jam on his headphones and bury his head in a book.

Price of fame? Maybe. But I think that you should be able to enjoy a night in a pub much as the rest of us.

Debra said...

That is a -gorgeous- photo---wow!

It must be hard a good bit of the time to be the face that everyone knows wherever you go, especially when you just want to be one in a crowd and not the reason one has gathered. :( I hope that there are enough moments, though they must be rare, where you still feel as anonymous as you want to be in life.

That is a cool picture of the church. It's funny but churches in the UK and Ireland are being targeted by theifs for the tin, commodity price is sky high (pardon the pun), on their roofs. You should have gone inside and looked up to see if the roof was on.

Hello Jorge,

The church pic is great. I think it would work also as a nice desktop for your pc.

Being recognisable is a curse and a blessing at the same time. Curse because some times you cannot enjoy your privacy and blessing because it means that you are good in what you do and people really loves you!

Hurley in LOST is a "cartoonistic" (don't know if it is the correct word to use) character that although he is not the only one starring, somehow he receives all the attention of the audience because of his unique way to be the "little hero" that is an irreplaceable factor in the progress of the story.

And if you ever visit Greece and cross my way, I will not start shouting “it is Hurley …it is Hurley” but I hope asking to have a pic with you won’t be much tiresome.

Your LOST fun from Athens - Greece,

Oh my goodness. I hope you blow up that picture and frame it. Just amazing. (You can have it done on a mouse pad - and on a shirt - and on a magnet at Cafepress........ I use them all the time (but for much less exciting pictures!!)

Thanks for taking the time to share your travels. Always brings a smile!

That was funny :)

Also exactly why I don't bother famous people, and I see a lot where I live. Must suck to be hounded.

Though I did do a triple take at Ben Kingsley. He is the only one who has stunned me so far.

That's a good shot of the cross. :)

People are dumb, huh? Like you can't possibly mind giving up your vacation time to work. People don't realize doing photo ops, etc., is work. Yuck.

Ah...the price of fame! BTW, I just started watching LOST a couple of months ago. You play an awesome character, dude!!!!

I love the photo of the church! excellent!

It must suck to be famous. Although I have to confess if I saw you in public I would be pretty geeked to!

Nicole said...

I can't believe you were only an hour down the road from me! You should have come to Clonmel to try some Bulmers! ;)

It must be tough to be a celeb especially with eejits who scream in your face when you're trying to have a quiet drink.

But I'd be kind of shocked too, I must admit. Hope you had a good time.

A F said...

I always try to play it cool when I see famous people and leave them be. But I imagine that if I was drunk it'd be a lot harder to stick to that.
Actually, the last time we were at California Adventure, we just happened to be on the same rides as Silent Bob's kids for, like, 20 minutes. And I'd just seen him in Catch and Release a few days before and thought he was the best part about that movie. And I wanted to tell him, because I really was so impressed with his performance, but not only could I not remember his real name, but I also couldn't remember the name of the movie at the time, and I didn't want to be like, "Hey, Silent Bob, I loved you in that movie with Jennifer Garner!" So, yeah. The one time I was going to bother a famous person in public, I didn't, because I didn't want to sound like a dork.
Maybe more people need to have that fear of dorkitude.
