  2. Were they any good? I got some home grown from a neighbor once and they looked good, but they were the most awful bitter things I've ever eaten...ever.

  3. And some big children don't either! (me!) :)

  4. Man, Lima beans sure are tasty!

  5. I dunno. When my brother was a small lad, he loved the lima beans. Used to steal them off someone else's plate.

  6. I am on the LOVE that bean side. You grew them you must like them a little. I would l9ike to see more of your garden. Spring is almost here in the State of Misery I mean Missouri. My garden is waiting my attention. And big bird Zachary is ready for some outside time.

  7. MAybe next season you could plant another tomato instead of lima beans, they probably were'nt worth the tending.

  9. I have to tell you that I just love reading your blog - you are so "down to earth" and normal I forget that you are a big celebrity!

    thanks for keeping it real!

  10. I love these beans and that is just enough to make me mad!

  11. Sometimes I wonder how we managed to survive as a species. Creating/finding food is HARD work. Dang.

  12. Oh, lima beans. I hate them so. I think it's the texture that really gets to me. I'm gagging a little as I type this.

  13. I think small children are often conditioned by their parents, who were conditioned by *their* parents, who were conditioned by *their* parents... to hate lima beans. Fresh ones are delicious; those canned atrocities -- or, worse, those suffering the fate of canned succotash -- are something else altogether. Blech.

Also: has anyone ever *not* loved everything that came out of their own garden? I think not.

  14. MMMMMMmmmmmm beeeeeeeeeeeeeans!

You're right, not nearly enough beans. Your little bowl is bean tease. Nobody likes a tease!

  15. Lima beans are okay, if SMOTHERED in melted butter. But then, anything is okay smothered in butter! *g*

Just as long as they're not straight from a can on the Kahuna. YUCK.

    : ) P

  16. I liked lima beans when I was a small child. And still do!

  17. Lima beans are okay. Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, beets and turnips are NOT. LOL Those pics remind me of summers at my grandma's, Jorge, picking her garden and snapping beans while she and Mom canned them.

  18. LOVE lima beans in small doses and I've only had frozen (my Mom would put mixed veggies in borscht and I always felt like I found a treasure when I found a lima bean!)
(ok, in my defense, we lived out in the toolies so we took our amusement where we could find it.)

I did try them alone as a side...lima overload.
Fresh would probably be much better though.

  19. My kids hate lima beans. Though my youngest likes peas but then again, he is very weird.

  20. I have 4 kids (11, 8, 6, 4) and I'm proud to say they all like limas.... which is weird given that they're all kind of picky eaters. Limas and pintos are high on their list, though! Mmmmm...pintos. Maybe I need to put some in the Crock Pot for dinner tonight...

  21. I have a seven year old that will gladly take limas and broccoli off your hands. He doesn't like potatoes...weird little kid.

  22. Please boil the lima beans before consuming. Fresh lima beans contain cyanide which can be removed by boiling.

I learned this from a Coop I was part of. You can actually smell the cyanide as you boil it. MMMM Almonds

  23. Adults don't like lima beans either. They're icky. I've never even seen a lima bean in a pod before!

  24. Lima beans are great if you parboil them, then sautee with some minced onion. Make sure the onions get brown and almost crispy before you add the beans. Add some Kewpie brand mayonaise, if you can find it.

  25. Throw a little corn in there...sufferin succotash!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. You can have 'em. I'm not a fan of lima beans.

    ReplyDelete
  27. You should have them with some liver and a nice chianti...ffff...ffff

(I know its a different kind of bean, but I couldn't resist)

  28. Oh eww... you can keep the lima beans.. to me they taste like wet kleenex

  29. Hang in there! My son planted one bean last summer, and it overtook our whole back fence. We had Lima Beans out the wazoo! If you call them butter beans, kids are more likely to try them.

  30. oh! lima beans were my favorite when i was a kid! every birthday, when we could choose whatEVer we wanted for dinner, i always chose: frozen lima beans. srsly!

  31. Jorge,

It takes a real man to shell and eat lima beans. I had to do that as a teen. I tried every trick in the book to get out of it, including sticking unshelled lima beans in with the shelled ones - moms have a second sense about these types of things so it never worked. In fact last summer I was visiting my mother and she picked and I shelled some lima beans. But when it came time to eat, I didn't want any lima beans. However that didn't stop my mother from loading my plate. The conversation that ensued went something like this.

JH: Mom I don't want any lima beans.
MOM: Nonsense their good for you.
JH: Mom I'm (insert appropriate age here) years old and I'll eat what I want.
MOM: Nonsense, you’re in my house and I'm (insert moms age here - I don't feel like committing suicide by revealing her age) and I still eat them.
    JH: Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

  32. Did you grow them yourself? Then those limas are precious gifts!

  33. Tomorrow you will have more than you know what to do with!

How about mashing them up with some lemon juice and serving on crostini with lashings of olive oil?

    ReplyDelete
  34. You are very right, Jorge, small children DO NOT like lima beans! I remember in pre-school, they would force us to eat lima beans, and I would hide them under my napkin till I got caught. Never again will I eat lima beans!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I always feel such a sense of accomplishment when I actually get food to grow, even a small amount.

    ReplyDelete
  36. blech. You can have my share. Though they are pretty.

  37. Hi Jorge and all

My Grandma, God rest her soul, made the very best Lima beans and Ham. I can still taste them and i'm one of those Senior Citz. Just use a slow cooker recipe. Grandma used fresh beans I'm sure.
Less than 2 months now and I will be waving Aloha to Waikiki beach. Hard to wait it out.

  38. You should let Nunu try them. She might even like them.

  39. Fresh or frozen lima beans (NOT canned) are my favorite vegetable. I'm now living on a far-away and mysterious South Pacific island(sound familiar? we even have people who speak French here since it is New Caledonia),so I can only eat them when I visit the States. Enjoy your home-grown variety!!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Actually, lima beans were the closest thing to green veggies my mom could get me to eat.

I thought those were edamame for a sec.

    ReplyDelete
  41. LoL you probably shouldn't share with Nunu.. could be a very stinky outcome!

    ReplyDelete
  42. When I was a kid, I would always pick out the lima beans and potatoes out of vegetable soup first. They were my favorites.

    ReplyDelete
  43. my kids do. you can mail them to me.

  44. MY small children eat lima beans. I have a 6 y.o. DD, 4.5 y.o. DD, 3 y.o. DS and 5 mo old DD (still exclusively nursed, of course). The older 3 will eat whatever we're having. If they don't, they'll be hungry enough to eat well at the next meal. We don't have picky eaters in this house. :-)

  45. but everything tastes better when it's home grown, no matter the quantity!

  46. Bg kids (like this one) do not like the bean of lima either!

Just watched the last 2 episodes of Lost - you cracked me up with your time travel questions, and when you stumped Miles. Your facial expression and folded arms cracked me up!!

    Keep up the great work!

  47. I have a 4 year old who loves them and that serving there wouldn't be enough for her either :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. my dad used to make me eat lima beans. and there was no option of hiding them somewhere else like in the napkin or mashed potatoes... so i swallowed them whole with the oj.
