Saw a black widow spider in my parent's recycling bin.

So I recycled a phone book on it.

That is great thinking. I shudder with wonder about where they may live. Wherever black widow spiders live, I don't want to live there. Of course you should not tell me where they live, I'll just stay home. Not that stayng home will keep me safe, horrible accidents occur in homes all the time.

Jorge... good thinking. I probably would have been so freaked out that I may have recycled my breakfast on it.

I slayed a scorpion in my garage last night. They're about 4-5 inches long, bright green and scary as heck. I used a 3 foot long piece of 1 inch plastic conduit pipe, held it carefully right above the thing, slammed it down and...squish! Held it there until it stopped wiggling. That took a while.

I am now "Goofy the scorpion slayer". Not to be confused with that other blonde chick that slays vampires of course. ;)

Glad you recycled the thing Jorge!

I saw a large brown bear on the way to work. I had to slow the car down so it could walk across the street. I work in New Jersey!!

Apparently here if you see one you have to report it and they come collect it. I've never in my life seen one up here in Canada though.

Well done! I hate that bugs... xD

My roommates and I found one in our garage last year and for some bizarre reason we decided to keep it as a pet. We named her Bimo (was short for Big Mama). Any normal person would've done exactly what you did though!

Phone books work....I hate those things.

The only times I've ever seen a black widow was around or INSIDE a grill.

So they like outdoorsey food and recycle?

Who knew black widows were so granola?

A friend of mine found a link to the FOX interview you did in Munich, Jorge. Only what YOU say is in English (with German subtitles) but it was still fun to see. Not sure if you get a chance to read all these comments, but here it is in case you want to post it to your main page:

I can't believe the poor Germans had to wait until APRIL to start Season Five!

Dr. Artz would be ashamed of you. . .if he weren't scattered over half the Pacific. I, on the other hand, applaud you. One less spider in this world is all good!

Good for you. I'm a girl and I usually don't have trouble killing spiders. Except if I happen to be undressed. Then I get too scared to do it. Weird but true.

Well done you!

Uh, I hate spiders, all kinds of them! Well done!

@ Petra
Season five wasn't aired in Germany at all! And it won't be until January next year! We're up to a year after you, but real fans (like me) find a way to see it a few days after you ;)

I would have squealed and made my husband recycle it!

Matthew said...

Funny, I saw two today myself. However, I didn't kill them (my coworker opted to go the murderous route instead). Got some good pictures of the (not so) little bugger before her demise.

I'm more curious about how many times I HAVE NOT seen them...that's scarier to me.

In college I killed a spider with my husbands huge textbook, and left it there for him to clean up. It's one of his favorite stories to tell at parties now.

My kids often come running screaming that they have seen a black widow. It usually turns out that it's either a piece of lint, or a rollie pollie. But I go running to make sure each time, nonetheless.

Jorge, I am recovering from a Brown Recluse Bite to the right hand. I missed the last week of my finals and now have to make up the work. I was in the Hospital for 4 days on IV antibotics and big time pain killers. Got blood poisoning too. All I can say is,
Now all spiders are paying the price with their lives. It happened to me in May. No more good spider bad spider for me. Once bite was enough.

Ok thanks. I just spit coffee on my computer screen. Jorge! I don't know why I found that so funny but I did. Thanks for a good laugh.

You did what most people would have done, Jorge. Although a telephone book was way overkill! :)

Elaine said...

While I totally support your action, I recently discovered that only one person every five years gets bit by one of those things. That's wicked low. And what are the odds that the one person for this five years would be a celebrity. See? You're totally safe.

On another note, have you seen the brown widows? Those things are freaky. They have spiky egg sacks and look like they'd like to hold you down and make you their bitch. Here's the one found under the boat at my house: http://www.flickr.com/photos/gingerlane/2863589658/

Can you bring a phone book by for her, please?

Check out if you like it.

I once killed a spider with hairspray (to stun it, in the hopes it would not launch a counter-attack), a hammer (which I used repeatedly, while chanting "Die, [multi-syllable obscenity]!") and a cake server (to scoop the remains up, of course). That was eleven years ago, and my spouse still hassles me over it. Don't know why.

Sure it was a black widow? I mean, you know how every shark in the ocean is a great white if someone spots a shark and is freaked out? The same happens with dogs, snakes, and so on.

Not that a different spider would warrant any other reaction, I'm just curious if it really was a black widow.

Also, how little do you have to recycle before a spider decides to set up shop in the recycling bin?

Daniel said...

Hey gang,

I hope you hadn't had your worst nightmare ever, HUH?!

May the force be with this widow spider so it kills us in another life :]

First time I've seen this, cheers from Spain.

In 1981, ed hardy and his wife formed

Hardy Marks Publications. In 2004, Christian Bale licensed the rights to

produce the high-end Ed Hardy UK line, which is based on Hardy's

imagery. Prior to the ed hardy

line, Bale was the Head Designer at Von Dutch

Originals, which marketed the imagery of Kenny Howard. Don ed

time to take on a partner that could help me manage

the demand and opportunities for the ed

management and clearly has the capabilities to dramatically grow the Ed

Hardy UK business. I'm thrilled to have them as a partner. Cheap Ed
