The Best Toy I Bought this Summer

Even though I am technically grown up and have no children, I can't walk by a toy store without looking inside.

I'm especially a sucker for toys I'd never seen before.

Some don't always deliver as promised. I recently picked up this Balloon Helicopter in Sausalito and got it to work only once as described on the box.
The rest of the the time it fell to the ground whistling annoyingly until the air ran out. I honestly think the only reason anyone would tolerate the noise this thing makes is if it actually flew.

However one toy that for me delivered exactly as I thought it would is Kid Galaxy's "Bump and Chuck RC Bumper Cars."
I picked it up at FAO Schwarz in New York and travelled with it for weeks before getting it home to actually get to try it out.

It took a little to get it working. But once I did I've had nothing but fun with this thing.
It basically takes the greatness of "Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots" and goes "one louder" by making them remote controlled cars.
You chase each other around until one of you bumps the other on one of the two side buttons, sending your opponent's driver into the air. It's a lot of fun.

  1. Did you go to Sausalito Ferry Company? I love that store so much, they have the craziest inventory. Glad you enjoyed Marin as much as I enjoy living there!

  4. I wish I could live like you.

If only I had enough money to get a frontal lobotomy too... a man can dream though, a man can dream.

  7. You need to let the "Bump and Chuck RC Bumper Cars" folks know that you are endorsing their product, because I immediately want to get them and you should at least be rewarded for your good review!

  9. I agree with Petra let the company know, and if they send you mass quanitys of the toy start a league of Bump n Chuck Smackdown. I envision a portable track, with built in hazzards well you get the idea. I going online to look for my own floor Warriors. Thanks for the spark of fun this morning with my coffee.

  10. I'm the same way about toy stores, Jorge. :)

Poseable action figures (with really good likenesses) are my weakness, not so much into cars and planes.

My dad used to collect Matchbox cars, etc. for a time...I guess I get my penchant for collecting from him.

  11. That's how my husband is!
My mom got my kids these toys that are on a lawnmower type mechanism and they are just a platsic cirle with "spokes/blades" in the middle, you put the circle (with an led light on it) on the handle menchanism, pull the lawnmower string and it flies extremely high. It was alot of fun, best part they were like $1.50 each. I got everyone of the kids stuck on a 3 story high roof-too fun-the kids werent happy-I did it 3 times.
You should try and find them, you would really like them!

  12. Jorge, I just googled the toy and your blog showed up, here it is: Dispatches from the Island Jul 10, 2009 ... However one toy that for me delivered exactly as I thought it would is Kid Galaxy's "Bump and Chuck RC Bumper Cars." ...
I hope the Galaxy people see it.

  13. Mr. Jorge... you must visit thinkgeek.com! Seriously. If you're a child of the 80's, a geek (not that I'm implying...) or just like plain old fun you have to check it out. They even have shirts that interact with each other, a hot potato game that shocks people (kick-a#$!), and- a company after my own little-girl heart- a cute, fuzzy, singing gizmo! Seriously? Seriously! http://www.thinkgeek.com/geektoys/plush/b89a/

  16. Since it looks like you've been hanging out in Sonoma and Marin--if you're still in the area you need to check out Heebe Jeebe in Petaluma. Fun unique toy store =)

  19. Actually I would think "Bump and Chuck Bumper Cars" would be anything BUT boring. I'm Canadian and I find myself envious of the well entertained Americans who have this toy.

    :-p

  23. Never feel silly about buying toys! My office is a shrine to my youth, and whenever I see childhood faves at antique malls, on eBay, etc. I scoop them (back) up.

  26. I think you have inspired my son's b'day present. I think he will love the Bump and Chuck RC Bumper Cars.

BTW, I enjoy your blog. You seem like a really cool person. I enjoy getting a little bit of Hawaii through your blog. We visited there last summer. I miss it. I also am a total LOST fan.

  27. That is sad.
Just think of some kid purchasing the balloon toy and having the problems you had.
    Pooh on the manufacturer!

Also, your post yesterday on cucumbers.
They need to be harvested before they grow too big.
    One, they will taste better.
    Two, they're not as scary.

Love your blog, it's a hoot!

  28. Gotta stop by my toy store in Lake Placid, NY then. Totally out of the way, I know. But what the hell. We need some gimic to get people up here other than the Olympics from years ago.
