Automated dialogue replacement (ADR) is the process of re-recording the original dialogue after filming for the purpose of obtaining a cleaner, more intelligible dialogue track (also known as looping or a looping session).[1] In the UK it is called post-synchronisation or post-sync.

I used to hear it called "Automated", but now it seems like everyone called it "Additional".
It'd be cool to watch someday a video of the cast working at ADR
I know it as "additional" but I was just looking for something official sounding that I could copy and paste rather than try to explain it myself.

Hubby and I worked TV and movies for years and years.. He worked for the company that does sound for Ron Howard's films, and I did fx- Foley! It would crack us up when his music would be on MY commercials, before we knew each other. Now we watch shows with a "bad loop", "oops, ADR slipped", "Foley sucked", or "Great afx." there's nothing sadder than the day you hear, "This was (insert name) last scene, It's a wrap. moving on.." hated hearing that.

Otherwise known as "dubbing"..
Actors have to go into a booth, watch themselves on playback, and re-record their dialogue in sync with the screen. They have to do this when the mikes during principal photog pick up anbient sounds, or when the mikes just f*** up and the dialogue didn't register...who knows why. Every actor has to do ADR. It's sort of like lip-synching, only it's not Milli Vanilli.
Sometimes you feel silly, completely idiotic (ie, making nonverbal sounds such as "uh, ah!, urrrgh, eeek!, etc.)or it's getting back into character six months after the original scene...("uhh, where is this? is this before or after the inhaler?")Or just completely confused and you just go with the script ("Okay, whatever, just give me the sides and let me get it over with....")
The fun part about ADR is: no makeup, no waiting, and nobody sees you doing it except the director,producer, and editor.
Unless, of course, they're doing a "Behind the Scenes"...

"Automated" is weird anyway. What's automated about it? Have the director and sound people been replaced by robots?
It actually seems like the opposite of automated to me... An automated process would involve a computer program pulling out the ambient noise from the original recording, not bringing in a bunch of people to do things.
Maybe something like this: You use your own voice, but it does not originate from the You 1.0, i. e. the version of you that has been filmed, but rather from You 2.0 that is watching the clips afterwards? (Vocal out-of-body experience?) Hell, I can't explain it better either. Abbreviations don't make it better, though ...

My friends and I went wine tasting today in Sonoma and, in our tipsy state, realized that we were close to Santa Rosa. I (apparently) went around asking the winery workers where the mental hospital was so we could take a pic of us in front of it and send it to you.
...Let's just say I'm glad that we soon realized that it wasn't actually filmed there. But, I just wanted to let you know that you were on our minds and we were excited about the potential of sending you a kick-ass picture. Cheers, Jorge!

I HATE that Lost is ending! I have a horrible feeling that Hurley is not going to survive and just thinking about it makes my stomach hurt. When they killed off Charlie I was shocked, I named my chihuahua puppy Charlie after him...but nothing will make up for Hurley's demise! I am almost scared to watch tomorrow and can't believe how much the characters feel like family and the feeling of grief after last week's episode. PLEASE not Hurley...I couldn't take it :(
When you switch from Dispaches from the Island to wherever your new spot will be, maybe you could have an entry about how you and Beth met!
PS - I just found your blog pretty recently and so I've been reading the back entries during lunch breaks and stuff. But I'm all caught up now and it kinda bums me out. And it's happening way too close to the end of LOST.
When you started sobbing on the show after the sub accident - man, you made me cry. I'm going to miss my favorite island guy! Your good karma will follow you everywhere. Peace.
Sometimes I think the end of a theatrical run is easier because the curtain comes down, you all say goodbye, you pack up, go to the bar, and it's more of a clean break.
This -- you have a final day of shooting, and then you have the ADR and then you have to wait for it to air . . .on the one hand, it's been so great and you want to hold on, on the other hand, does it make it harder?
