So Beth and I actually had Thanksgiving on the Saturday before because we took off to the big island of Hawaii for Thanksgiving weekend.
The first thing we noticed on our way to the airport was all of the white rock messages people wrote on the black lava.
I thought I saw a rock that looked a lot like an aardvark until we got closer and I realized it was a metal silhouette placed amongst the rocks.
Then we passed the dinosaur.

Well, that dinosaur would have made me do a double take. But you are right...that one clump does look like an aardvark or as we have here in Florida, an armadillo!

Cool! We've spent every Thanksgiving for the last 20 years in either Kona, Waimea or Waiakaloa. Nice change of pace from Honolulu, isn't it?
I love the big island. The first time I went I was amazed by some of the work people went into to make those messages. Way less "white trashy" than red plastic cup messages on highway gates.

Wow, those are so cool! In Canada as you drive north along the Canadian Shield (which is basically where the land turns to rock) there are lots of little inukshuks lining the roads. Have you ever seen the white chalk drawings on the hills in England? Some of those are pretty amazing... of course, then you have the people who create fake ones and send the locals into a frenzy. ;)

That is pretty cool. People on the big island got to do something to keep themselves entertained. Well, the ocean and volcanoes kept me entertained, but I'm a tourist. I don't know how the people who live there all the time feel about the island.
I thought that was a pretty cool thing, seeing the messages, but never the messenger...hmmm!
I went to the Big Island with my stepmom, dad and teammate two winters ago. My teammate and I had plans to sneak off and make a white rock sign, but couldn't think of anything awesome that wouldn't require a ton of rocks. Did y'all write anything?
...and now we have proof. There ARE dinosaurs on the Island!

Hi Jorge! We were on the big island in Sept. for our honeymoon and we heard from many people in Kilauea Kona that the white rock is their graffiti.Its mostly coral people bring in from the beaches. So we didn't want to do it, but we did do it at The South Point where we knew one good wave would wash it away, but we took lots of pictures first!
Aren't they cool? I live on the west side of the Big Island and I've seen so many awesome rock messages...proposals, apologies, inspirational messages to ironman triathletes, lame company logos and alohas from the hotels,lewd pictures and sayings left by teenagers, etc. So fun! Hope y'all had an awesome holiday up here!
